Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is not go WTF?! during this movie

Featuring
Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt
Jeremy Renner as William Brandt
Simon Pegg as Benji Dunn
Rebecca Ferguson as Ilsa Faust
Sean Harris as Solomon Lane
and Zhang Jingchu for no apparent reason

Why should you wonder WTF during this movie? Because the storyline makes almost no sense. But then, this is a Mission Impossible film and who cares whether the story makes sense? We are only paying for tickets to see Tom Cruise running, hanging on to things and riding a motorbike, which all feature heavily here.

So, Ethan Hunt is hunting The Syndicate, what appears to be a shadowy organisation designed to disrupt the world and cause events that lead to war. And bad stuff. Something about letting innocent people die and all that. Ethan appears to finally be on the right track, until the IMF is shut down and he goes rogue (again). Why shutting down the International Monetary Fund is crucial to this movie, I do not know. Oh…you mean the Impossible Mission Force? Which has like four agents? That is so not a force, but a small black operations team, dudes. Also, stupid name.

This type of movie, of course, relies on its stunts to be its main drawcard. And while the stunts here are pretty good, they are in no way better than anything that was mustered up by the latest Fast and Furious movie. Think about it, The Rock holding a gatling gun and shooting down a helicopter full of baddies is so much better than Tom Cruise chasing down an attractive female secret agent on a motorbike. The other stunt I was most impressed with was the amount of Chinese money flowing into it, all for a thirty second cameo by the Chinese actress Zhang Jingchu, who appears in the main credits and has one line. Seriously, what a waste of time.

On the whole, I enjoyed Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation for what it is: a brainless stunt fest that features Tom Cruise. But when compared with all the other brainless stunt fests that have come out this year, Furious 7, and the second Avengers, this does not hold a candle to their action spectacularness. Even Simon Pegg could not make this movie funnier than Furious 7.

Rating

An entirely predictable Mission Impossible movie that uses all of its tropes. Except the face masks.

Watch this if you…

Need a does of crazy stunt action movie.

Don’t watch this if you…

Are hoping for a diplomatic resolution to international relationships and issues.
