Can Pierce Brosnan ever stop wanting to be James Bond again?

I like spy action movies. They’re slick, with slick and witty one-liners, intelligent, yet strong and sophisticated characters. Ok, so the characters usually aren’t complex, but you can hope right? The November Man stars perreniel spy Pierce Brosnan as Peter Devereaux, an elite superspy from the CIA. After his protege botches a mission in Europe, he retires to Switzerland for five years, before being contacted for help on a major case by his old boss, Hanley.

It turns out that the CIA is trying to bring down the Russian President, Federov, in the midst of his reelection campaign, with a touch of blackmail and subterfuge. Devereaux is tasked with finding out what people have on Federov, before anyone else does. Their first target is Alice Fournier, a social worker who helped to resettle refugees from the Chechnyan War. The rest of the movie basically follows lots of spy movie cliches, with Devereaux working to save Fournier from all those nasty spies.

And, yeah, there are plenty of cliches. Master versus protege, walking away from explosions without looking back, car chases through cities, plots and counterplots, conspiracies and trying to save the world. Oh, and there is a bit of “the end justifies the means” business. The only thing that’s really missing is a whole bunch of super unrealistic gadgets made by top secret boffins.

If you want to catch a dumb-spy-action-movie, by all means give The November Man a shot. It has a well known spy, Pierce Brosnan, some decent action and a cast that doesn’t annoy the audience in their efforts to expound the plot. Alternatively, you could watch some Jason Bourne movies. I’ve heard they’re better.

Watch this if you…

Are an abject fan of Pierce Brosnan

Don’t watch this if you..

Think that Pierce Brosnan needs to go do something else with his life.
