I had the good fortune of spending some time in Queensland last week, relaxing, lounging and joining together in celebrating a great milestone for our friends. As it was the first time I had ever been there, I had no idea what the place was like.
We visited Mackay and Airlie Beach in the Whitsunday region of Queensland, warm, tropical and sunny. Conveniently, it only seemed to rain at night. The vegetation and scenery is a complete contrast to the dry, yellow plains that cover Victoria and is a welcome change. The novelty of seeing the mini sugar cane train weaving and winding is way along the Bruce Highway was definitely fun. At least they seemed to be working better than Metro here in Melbourne.
I really enjoyed the trip, save for the humidity, but I can deal with that. However, since it is a major tourist spot, expect many bogans, backpckers (not that the European ones are bad) and much overpriced food there.
